WHYALLA

Whyalla, on the red-earthed Eyre Peninsular of South Australia, is a town whose landscape is dominated by iron ore deposits, processing plants, and steelworks. Heavily reliant on the industry for its livelihood, Whyalla has been through many boom-and-bust cycles. And in 2021 the future of the steelworks was once again thrown into doubt after the collapse of Greensill Capital, the company that finances the steelworks owner GFG Alliance. Whatever its future, the rusty-coloured buildings and the red dust-stained surroundings will continue to define the landscape. It’s both haunting and beautiful - a hot, dry, and dusty alien landscape that's strangely brought to life by stark industrial architecture and piles of red earth.
